東大などの最難関の大学を除けば、Essentialの内容が大学の生物学の座学の大部分に相当すると言ってもよいほど詳しく生物学について学ぶことができます。
・ 全864ページの一冊に生物学の基礎が詰め込まれている
・ これさえ勉強しておけば生物通と言える(中堅大学卒業程度の知識量は手に入る)
・ 分厚くて重く、持ち運びには向かない
・ なぜか「免疫」だけ完全に省かれている(高校レベルの内容すら記述がない）
・ 翻訳文なので、少々日本語っぽさに欠けている
本書の原文は英語で、翻訳された文章ですので、少々、日本語として読みづらさを感じてしまう部分があります。といっても、翻訳が悪いのではなく、わたしは英語版も持っていますが、「確かにわかりにくいけど、日本語ではこうとしか訳せないんだよな」と感じるような箇所ばかりです。
なお、日本人の著者が書いた入門用のテキストとしておすすめなのは『基礎から学ぶ生物学・細胞生物学』です。
英語に自信があったり、大学院に進学する予定の方は、英語版に挑戦してみるのをおすすめします。たしかに専門用語はありますが、平易な英語で書かれているのでわかりやすい文章です。修士に進んで英語の論文を読み書きするならば、これくらいは身につけておきたいというレベルの英語のテキストです。
